MTA MUSIC provides over individual musicians and ensembles the opportunity to participate in over 7, performances in approximately 30 locations throughout the New York City transit system each year. The new system will allow passengers to simply tap their cards or smartphones to pay their fare. The agency received over applicants this year, with approximately 70 being selected to participate in the final auditions. Finalists will be given five minutes to complete their audition and will be judged by dozens of fellow musicians, members of cultural institutions, music industry professionals and MTA operations staff. Judges will evaluate the auditions in regards to overall quality, musical variety, cultural diversity and appropriateness for public transit networks. Electric Light Rail Transit would be significantly more costly. Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission. All rights reserved About Us. Nicola Vazquez has had an amazing experience busking in the subway. Photo: Bryan Close. I was born on the Lower East Side and grew up in the low-income projects, sharing toys with my baby brother. My father was a mechanic and my mother a nurse. Neither was musically inclined, but both shared their appreciation and love for all types of music with us.
